About Wedgetail Systems Europe
A group of Australian riders and technicians banded together to develop the best, most efficient and reliable digital ignition upgrade for the 247 series BMW Airhead motorcycle.
Each developer brought skills that were vital for creating an ignition system for classic type 247 BMW motorcycles.
Langdon Green is the computer and coding expert.
Neal Lowe is a skilled engineer with many years’ experience in motor racing engineering in Australia.
Les Fitzpatrick designs computer operated mining systems. Les set up invaluable test equipment for monitoring things like coil and processor temperatures. He also accompanied Mark on a rainy 3,000 km ride to test five different ignition curves.
This long test gave us the bare bones data on which to develop the WEDGETAIL. Langdon’s father, John, used his 90/6 and his R80 to endlessly test various trigger systems. This arduous work resulted in the single and twin-trigger ignitions we produce today.
Mark Morrissey, owner of MMM’s BMW Boxerworks, owns 5 airheads from a 60/5 to a 450,000 km R100GSPD (Kenny). His experience in riding and repairing these machines was critical through revision after revision of every aspect of the design and construction of the WEDGETAIL ignition system
There are also more than 20 Australian Airhead riders (long haul outback riders to daily commuters) who volunteered their bikes as test models for us, including Paul Tierney, who works with Mark at the Boxerworks. He test rides virtually every bike they work on, rides 100 km round trip to work each day and with Mark has ridden on countless outback camping holidays over nearly 20 years.
We put in over 45,000 km of testing to eventually bring our Australian made ignition system to our fellow Airheads. We believe it is the best digital ignition system anywhere.
It is this level of experience with the Airhead machine, the dedication to a world class product made in Australia, and a passion for excellence rather than profit that has driven this process from beginning to the superb riding experience for all Airhead owners it is now.
Our European representative, Matt Wesselhoff, bought an R75/5 in 1986 and has been an Airhead ever since. He currently has, somewhat inexplicably, three R100GS motorcycles. He is an American living in Southern Germany and can help you in German or English.
